Tips to Stay Healthy When You're Stressed

You and I get to experience stress every day of our lives. Stress can be both good or bad.

When we’re faced with mild stress, such as meeting work deadlines or preparing for a job interview, we tend to push ourselves to give our best. This helps us become more proactive. However, stress that goes on for days or weeks can wreak havoc on our bodies. When faced with negative life situations for an extended period, our physical and mental energies get depleted.

Why Proper Stress Management Matters

Managing stress, the right way is important to preserve your health for the long term. Without proper stress management techniques, you become at risk for several problems such as heart disease, a weakened immune system, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Nobody wants these things to happen. If you find yourself under prolonged stress and need to take better care of yourself, here are a couple of tips you should follow.

1. Go outdoors and experience nature.

Do your long hours at work make you feel pressured and anxious? There’s something about greenery and fresh air that soothes your soul. The orderliness of nature and the pleasing sights and sounds of natural elements enhance your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

According to research, it has been found out that nature distracts people from discomfort. After spending time outdoors, in a nature setting, individuals who feel depressed and stressed out feel calmer afterward. Go and hike in the mountains with your friends during the weekend. Have a walk in the park with your dog.

2. Eat healthy snacks with stress relief benefits.

Stress eating can be hard to resist. Most people turn to food for comfort and often choose the wrong snack varieties – high sodium chips, sugary treats, and other junk foods. If you’re craving for something tasty to munch on when you’re feeling down, pick healthier options instead. There are lots of healthy snacks that act as natural mood boosters.

Great examples of these snacks that bust stress include nuts and seeds, avocados, cereal bars with fruits, and blueberries. They contain high amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that help calm your nerves and aid in cell repair and rejuvenation.

3. Engage in regular exercise.

Whether you do aerobics, lift weights, or engage in yoga sessions, exercise benefits your body in many ways. Not only does it help you achieve a better weight, it also increases your strength and stamina. Exercise should be an indispensable part of any stress management plan.

On the subject of stress reduction, physical activity has been known to promote the release of your body’s feel-good hormones. These are your endorphins. Not only that, beingfully immersed in the rhythmic movements of exercise helps take your mind off your worries.

4. Get some sleep.
Don’t you know that lack of sleep decreases your ability to cope with life’s stresses? When your mind is constantly trapped in the habit of overthinking and you’ve been toiling the entire day, sometimes all that you need is a good night’s rest. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute mentions that sleep improves your brain function by enhancing your ability to learn and cope with change.

This explains why people who are sleep deficient cannot effectively solve problems and handle their emotions. To develop a healthy sleeping habit, stick to a relaxing bedtime routine. Avoid drinking caffeine in the evening. Read an inspirational book or listen to soothing music.

5. Surround yourself with positive people.

You may not realize it but the persons you often spend time with affect your thoughts and feelings. When you’re stressed, the last thing you need is to be with someone who complains and criticizes. Draw strength and positivity from those who are focused on solutions.

Good people practice good and healthy habits which you’re more likely to adapt subconsciously. Optimistic friends fill your heart with uplifting messages. Pessimistic friends drain your energy to the point that you lose the drive to take healthy steps to handle your stress.

Wrap Up

Stress is unavoidable. But the good news is that you can counteract the negative effects of prolonged stress on your health by following these helpful tips. After all, what really matters is how you respond to stress. Overwhelming situations can get the best of you. Remember that keeping yourself healthy enables you to better deal with life.

Balay Verde Serves Fresh Food From Farm to Table

Nowadays, a lot of restaurants or fast food chains are sprouting like mushrooms all over Davao. It seems like every week, a new food place opens in the city. Wherever you go, there will always be one new player in the food industry that is excited to serve dabawenyos their sumptuous dishes, desserts or drinks. Joining this trend is Balay Verde which had its soft opening earlier this month at the second floor of the corporate center of Abreeza Mall.

Everything in Balay Verde will make you feel at home. This new restaurant may be located inside a mall but the area is quite relaxing especially that it's already far from the busy stalls in Abreeza. The simplicity and the rustic feel of its interiors will also calm your senses. You will see wooden tables, old kitchenwares and some antique items all over the place. What's even better is the fact that all their servers are polite and kind. At least, that's what I experienced when I went to Balay Verde to celebrate my tita's birthday.

What makes Balay Verde unique is it does not only serve buffet merienda, lunch or dinner. You can also get fresh and organic food from them. With the aim of making healthy food more accessible to the public, Balay Verde brings farm products to its store. The six owners of this restaurant are also local farm owners making it easier for Balay Verde to provide fresh food from farm to kitchen at affordable prices. The major suppliers are:
  • La Fermette (Tacunan) - Jean-Michel Desreumaux and Francis Eric Tam
  • Gems Farm (Tacunan) - Gerardo Suelo and Michelle Suelo
  • Huni Farm (Wangan) - Louella Garcia and Mavic Abisisit

These are some of the farm produce items you can shop at Balay Verde:

Balay Verde also serves freshly cooked dishes for their lunch and dinner buffet. The cost is only Php 299 per head, with free-flowing fresh tea. They also serve luscious pinoy desserts for the merienda buffet. The cost is only Php 199 per head, with diner's choice of brewed coffee, hot choco or fresh juice.

According to one of its owners, Jean-Michel Desreumaux, they use organic and natural ingredients for all their food sourced from La Fermette, Gems Farm and Huni Farm. This is their way of ensuring that they can serve good and healthy food to all their guests. He also added that while other ingredients may not be able from their farms, they source it from other local suppliers.

This new food place in the city also caters ala carte food orders.
  • Salad in a bowl - Php 240-270
  • Salad in a wrap - Php 220-240
  • Brewed coffee - Php 80
  • Hot chocolate - Php 85
  • Fresh juice - Php 85
For the desserts, just ask the servers to find out what kind of dessert they offer for the day.

Overall, my experience at Balay Verde was highly satisfying. I like how accommodating everyone from the restaurant is. It's such a happy place to be in. I also enjoyed the food served during the dinner buffet. The minatamis (sweetened banana dessert) was my most favorite! Most importantly, I had fun checking out the farm produce products from Balay Verde. The 1L Fresh Milk of La Fermette  is a must-try. You can get this oh-so-good drink for only P75.

Game of Thrones Season 7 Finale: Favorite Quotes From The Intense Meeting at Dragonpit

This post contains spoilers for GOT's The Dragon and The Wolf (Season 7, Episode 7). Please be advised that reading this write up will spoil the season finale. Proceed with caution. Remember, you've been warned.

The season finale of Game of Thrones is probably the hot topic today after it aired on HBO on Monday morning (PH time). It will surely be the talk of the town for the next couple of days not only for the die-hard GOT fans but also those who are just simple followers or viewers of the show. I bet everyone who has seen the finale would agree that it was so intense. A lot of things happened in the 80-minute episode and people would probably talk about how Littlefinger was executed in Winterfell, how the Queen Dragon and Jon Snow finally ended up in bed, how Theon was able to regain his self back, how Sam and Bran figured out that Jon is really Aegon Targaryen, how Jaime Lannister finally walked away from Cersei,  or how the Night King destroyed The Wall with the help of the Viserion.

All these events gave me chills but my favorite part was the first thirty minutes of the finale. It was one where the remaining "players" in the Game of Thrones gathered at the Dragonpit for a special meeting. We have Cersei Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Euron Greyjoy, Tyrion, Ser Jorah Mormont, Theon Greyjoy, Brienne, the Hound, Varys, Bronn, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen all in one place!

Normally, I would write about how I feel about the episode. Some of my readers know that I always use my blog to process and express my feelings after watching a movie or a TV show. But this time, I'm gonna let that habit go. Instead, let me share some of my favorite quotes from first major scene at "The Dragon and the Wolf".

Hound: “I left this shit city because I didn’t wanna die in it. Am I gonna die in it?”
Tyrion: “You might.”
H: “Seems every bad idea has some Lannister cunt behind it.”
T: “And some Clegane cunt to help them see it through.”

Hound to Mountain: “You’re even uglier than me now. What did they do to you? It doesn’t matter now. That’s not how it ends for you, brother. You know who’s coming for you. You’ve always known.”

Tyrion: “We are a group of people who do not like one another, as this recent demonstration has shown. We have suffered at each other’s hands, We have lost people we love at each other’s hands. If we all we wanted was more of the same, there would be no need for this gathering. We are entirely capable of waging war against each other without meeting face-to-face.”
Cersei: “So instead, we should settle our differences and live together in harmony for the rest of our days?”
T: “We all know that it will never happen.”
C: “Then why are we here?”
Jon: “This isn’t about living in harmony. It’s just about living.”

Daenerys: “You have my word.”
Cersei: “The word of a would-be usurper.”
Tyrion: “There is no conversation that will erase the last fifty years.”

Jon: "If we don’t win this fight, then that [white walker] would be the fate of every person in the world. There is only one war that matters — The Great War. And it is here.”

Cersei: “He’s right to be afraid and a coward to run. If those things come for us, there would be no kingdoms to rule. Everything we suffered would have been for nothing. Everything we lost would have been for nothing. The kingdom accepts your truce. Until the dead are defeated, they are the true enemy.”

Brienne: “Fuck loyalty.”
Jaime: “Fuck loyalty?"
B: “This goes beyond houses, honors and oaths.”

Tyrion: “I’m pleased you bent the knee to our queen. I would have advised it, had you asked. But have you ever considered learning how to lie every now and then? Just a bit?”
Jon: “I’m not going to swear an oath I can’t uphold. Talk about my father if you want, tell me that’s the attitude that got him killed. But when enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies. And lies won’t help us in this fight.”
T: "That is indeed a problem. But the more immediate problem is that we’re fucked.”

Jaime: “She thinks I was an idiot to trust you. A lot of people seem to think that, actually.”
Tyrion: “I’m about to step in a room with the most murderous woman in the world, who has tried to kill me twice, that I know of. Who’s the idiot?”
J: “I suppose we say goodbye, one idiot to another.”

Cersei to Tyrion: “Oh, poor little man. Your papa was mean to you. Do you have any idea what you did when you fired that crossbow? You left us open. You laid us bare for the vultures, and the vultures came and tore us apart. You may not have killed Joffrey but you killed Myrcella, you killed Tommen. No one would have touched them if Father was here. No one would have dared.”

Tyrion: “I am more sorry about the children than you could ever know. I loved them. You know I did. You know it in your hear if there’s anything left of it.”
Cersei: “It doesn’t matter. Your love doesn’t matter. Your feelings don’t matter. I don’t care why you did what you did. I only care what it cost us. It cost us our future.”

Cersei: “Get on a boat — take those who matter.”

Daenerys to Jon: “I respect what you did. Wish you hadn’t done it but I respect it. This place was the beginning of the end for my family. A dragon is not a slave. They were terrifying, extraordinary. They filled people with wonder and awe, and we locked them in here. They wasted away. They grew small and we grew small as well. We weren’t extraordinary without them. We were just like everyone else.”

How about you? What's your favorite line?

Learning The Basics From "Behind Portrait Photography" Workshop

Earlier this week, I attended a workshop organized by HUAWEI Philippines. It was called "Behind Portrait Photography" wherein a famous street and travel photographer flew all the way to Davao just to share some tips and tricks on how to take good photos. He is Larry Monserate Piojo who has also worked with the brand for the "100 Untold Stories Project." Under this campaign, Larry uses the P10 in taking portraits of different people all over the Philippines. What makes the project extra special is that it is made from the heart. Every story has a deep meaning or a wonderful story that is definitely worth sharing.

Storytelling Through Portraits

I have so much respect for photographers. It always amazes me how they can capture a moment in a beautiful way. They have the capacity to actually "make", not "take", photographs. Larry Monserate Piojo specializes in documentary photography. He loves travelling and taking photos of people he meets along the way. During the workshop, he explained how challenging it is to approach a person and ask for a photo. He emphasized the importance of instantly connecting with strangers and making them feel that he is not only interested for the photos but of their stories.

In presenting some of his photos, he said "Photography is a form of communication. It has become a powerful means of communication and a mode of expression that touches human life in many ways." His talk was basically focused on how to be good at storytelling through portraits. According to him, there are top five things to remember:

  1. Build confidence.
  2. Don't be afraid, get closer.
  3. Respect and dignify.
  4. Build trust.
  5. Be honest.

"Portrait Studio In Your Pocket"

The Marketing Director for HUAWEI Philippines, Corinne Bacani, went on stage to talk about the amazing features of the P10 and P10 Plus. These phones are famous for its Leica Dual Camera, allowing every user to have "a portrait studio in [his] pocket". With this technology, we need not bring our bulky DSLRs or mirrorless cameras to take good photos as we go to different places or explore certain communities. Even with a mobile phone, we can already have studio-like photographs.

The latest remarkable partnership made by HUAWEI was with Metro Magazine for the latter's July 2017. The cover photo, featuring the latest brand ambassador Pia Wurtzbach, as well as the in-pages portraits were shot using only the camera of P10. This is made possible by the new Leica Dual Camera 2.0 that uses precise 3D facial detection, dynamic illumination, and natural portrait enhancements to produce stunning artistic portrait shots in Leica image style.

What You Need To Know About HUAWEI P10 Features

Aside from the amazing Leica Dual Camera feature, the P10 and P10 Plus mobile phones also scream for efficiency, especially for the multi-taskers. Below are some of the other features that make Huawei's latest phone model a must-have!

1. Touch. Hold. Swipe. The innovative fingerprint sensor found in the P10 makes screen navigation easier and faster. Aside from the fingerprint lock, the front facing finger sensor also serves as a navigation key. It allows users to perform navigating gestures with ease. With this simple touch, hold and swipe navigation gestures, the phone can perform several operations at speed. On top of that, the one-button navigation also frees up your screen space making it look bigger.

2. Knuckle Control. Another impressive feature of the P10 is its ability to perform operations with the use of your knuckles. These knuckle gestures are perfect whenever you need to open the frequently used applications in an instant. So how does this work? You can draw certain letters with your knuckles while the screen is off. Thereafter, the corresponding application opens. For example, you can draw "C" with your knuckles and in an instant, the Camera App will be opened for you.

3. Stepping Up in Screenshots. One of the best things about having phones is that it allows us to take screenshots of so many things we find on the web or even on mobile apps. Huawei knows that almost everyone is taking screenshots so they have introduced a full, partial and scrolling screenshot features. Just by knowing the screen firmly with your knuckle twice, you can already take a fill screenshot. It even goes far as capturing screenshot with your desired shapes and a scrolling screenshot that captures screenshots longer than one screen.

4. Need to Multitask? No Problem. You can now view two apps at the same time with the Split Screen Mode and Multi-Window Mode of P10. Just by drawing a line in the middle of the screen, it allows you to have two apps running at the same time. This is such an interesting feature especially for people who wants to multi-task such as watching a TV series while reading or replying to e-mails.

5. Effortless Screen Recording. For me, this has got to be the second best feature of P10 next to its Leica Dual Camera technology. The P10 has a built-in screen recorder tool which makes screen recording effortlessly possible. To record, you can simply knock at the screen twice using two knuckles or press the volume up and power buttons simultaneously. It can start and stop a screen recording.

6. One-handed Operation Or With Gloves On. If you find the P10 or P10 Plus screen too big, don't worry. This mobile phone has a one-handed UI feature that enables screen navigating with one hand easier. It shrinks the screen down in the corner and makes apps easier to reach with one finger. At the same time, the Glove Mode feature of the phone allows you to text or scroll even with your gloves on.

"When you see the world more clearly, you see how beautiful it is."

So what can I say about the workshop? I'm glad I attended it. Larry Monserate Piojo inspired me to not only take photographs but also share stories through the photos I make. He makes me believe somehow that I, too, can be a good street and travel photographer. And right now, I'm contemplating on saving up to get my own P10. Maybe with this phone, I can already start my overdue "Life in Black and White" project. Let's see what will happen in the coming months!

A Warm Coffee Haven Opens in the Davao City

Drinking coffee has become a part of our lifestyle. In fact some of us cannot even survive a day without drinking one. There is something about coffee that makes us feel relaxed and powerful. On my part, I take coffee to improve my mood and boost my energy. Whenever I fail to get my dose of caffeine for the day, I become cranky. This is why I make it to a point to grab a cup of coffee from the local coffee shops or make one at the comforts of my own home.

I have a good news for all coffee lovers in Davao city. A brand new coffee corner has opened its doors for dabawenyos. What's even better is that they are completely affordable, with a cup of coffee for as low as Php 55 or a hot chocolate drink as low as Php 49. It's quite surprising how they can serve us our favorite beverages at a low price without compromising the quality of the drinks or the look of the coffee shop. Check the rest of the article to learn more about Johann Coffee Corner.

This new coffee corner in the city is a franchise of Johann Coffee and Beverages. The company believes that everyone deserves to indulge in his own beverage masterpiece to experience comfort, excitement and bliss. Johann Coffee Corner serves perfectly good coffee with variety of offerings and cozy interiors. All these reflect what it really is: a simple yet warm coffee haven that is open to people from all walks of life, whatever their story may be.

The sweet treats served at Johann Coffee Corner are exclusively baked by the owner itself and its head barrista. They do not have a supplier for their own cakes or cupcakes. You can expect that all the sweets are certainly made with passion and love. These cupcakes above were given for free to the customers who visit the coffee corner on its grand opening day.

The owner of Johann Coffee Corner knows that dabawenyos really love to it. We go to coffee shops not only to get our caffeine fix but also to satisfy our cravings for good food. This is why they started offering pasta dishes for everyone to enjoy. For me, the Carbonara Pasta tastes better than the Spaghetti Bolognese. Try it for yourself and tell me which is your favorite between the two!

For those who are not pasta lovers, do not worry because this coffee haven also serves Bacon and Egg with Cheese Sandwich. It is served with a handful of tasty fries on the side. This is perfect for coffee lovers who want to enjoy a quick lunch.

Click here to check the menu.

What I really like about Johann Coffee Corner is the affirmation it places in every cup. Do not be surprised to see words like "You're lovely," "You're beautiful," "Today is a good day," and other comforting words written on your cup of coffee. This new coffee haven in Davao will definitely make every dabawenyo smile.

Top 6 Chic Living Tips For Any ‘Minimalist’ Home

If you have been looking for home decoration ideas that are chic, clutter free, and stress-free at the same time, you’ve come to the right place. Not many people know that minimalism home decoration can be chic. Yes, it is possible to live comfortably and aesthetically with ‘less.’

But the question is ‘How can you go about it?’

A beautiful, chic home with a minimalist theme is one of the most difficult designs. All you have is some skill, restraint, and a bit of creative thinking. The following tips can add elegance and sophistication to your home and there is still plenty you can do from your side.

1.   Don’t Bring Everything You Like Into Your Home

Most of us tend to bring pretty much everything we like – furniture, accessories, and paintings into our home without thinking. The minimalist design we’re talking about is not about removing everything from your home – it’s about taking away excess layers.

2.   De-clutter

Minimalism isn’t about throwing everything from your rooms. However, the main point here is to create an aesthetic living space with less stuff.

Before you redecorate your room, you’ll have to de-clutter. Remove items you no longer need or are useless. Remember that you have to get rid of as many useless items as you can or else, your rooms would look and feel more cluttered.

3.   Think About A Simplified Design

Once you have the essential items in your space, consider how you should go around arranging every object or piece of furniture. Adding items of various shapes and sizes can make your living space a stylish one. For example, couch and sofas in different shapes are always a great pick for your chic living room.

4.   Add Elegant And Luxurious Elements

There’s truly nothing like the addition of luxurious elements to make your home feel sophisticated and elegant. For example, the addition of luxury kitchen faucets can bring authentic luxury to your minimalist kitchen. Check out if you’re in search of licensed plumbers to help you with installations.

5.   Play Attention To Your Color Scheme

You can certainly go with all white walls for a room and add colorful furniture to make the room seem brighter and more energetic. Sometimes an all-white theme can make backfire (white itself is a calming color, however, adding too much white into your living space can trigger feelings of emptiness and isolation).

Add a couple of bright colors in the form of rugs, wall accents, or painting to your rooms. Feel free to play with colors as well as different tones and textures. Yes, you can use various tones and shades of your favorite color for your wall, furniture, and even artwork.

Organizing your wardrobe and your bookshelves according to color is another exciting way to add some chic flair to your home. Regardless of the colors you choose, you should consider coordinating the different color themes as much as possible.

Be careful however, adding too many textures and colors in a small space will make your rooms more chaotic and junky.

6.   Everything Should Pair Together

Apart from de-cluttering your rooms and creating a unique color scheme, you should ensure that everything in your room pairs well together. This means every piece from your couch, sofa in the living room to the tiles and pipes in your bathroom should be in perfect harmony.

Top 5 Things I Look Forward To Every Kadayawan Season

Just by thinking about Kadayawan already brings so much excitement in me. There is something about this festival that makes me feel more alive during the month of August. 2017 is the 10th year that I will be celebrating Kadayawan in Davao city. While I may be busy these days, I will make it to a point that this year's celebration is going to be an epic one for me! In this article, let me share the top five things that make me excited about this annual festival celebrated by every Dabawenyo.

1. The Smell and Taste of Durian

While durian may be available for any day of the year, its price is relatively low and affordable during the Kadayawan season. For the previous months, the price for this fruit was around Php 250 to Php 300. But since the King of the Festivals is fast approaching, the price is now down to Php 100 or less. There is a high supply of Durian anywhere in Davao city during the celebration of Kadayawan. As a big fan of the Puyat and Arancillo variety of Durian, this is such a good news for me. It means that I can now give in to my cravings for durian without spending much for it.

2. Food Trips Everywhere

I love to eat. You love to eat. We all love to eat. That is why hearing the words "food trips" is like hearing music to our ears. Somehow, there is comfort in knowing that we can have the food trip we want anytime we like. This is made easier during the Kadayawan season as many pop-up food bazaars are made available. We can finally have a one-stop place for all our food cravings -- from street food to pinoy favorite dish to desserts. We can try all the dishes we want from some homegrown Davao restaurants just in one area.

3. Exciting Kadayawan Activities

Davao city will surely become more cheerful with the line up of activities prepared by the City Government. One of the events that I look forward to every year is the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan which showcases dance contingents from different regions of Mindanao. What is to love about it? The theatrical street dancing  anchored on Indigenous traditions. It will start from Roxas Avenue to San Pedro Square.

Check the schedule below:

To get updates about the upcoming festival, follow Kadayawan sa Davao on Facebook.

4. Pop-Up Stores

Kadayawan is also the best time to shop from several sellers or suppliers. Most of the exhibitors in the pop-up bazaars sell their products only through their online accounts. However, for the Kadayawan season, they are going to bring their best-selling items in a one-stop area to make shopping more fun and convenient for everyone.

On August 17-20, the Great Kadayawan Trade Fair and Bazaar will be open again. Enjoy the Holiday Payday Weekend at the Davao Convention Trade Center. The Event will feature the widest variety of products ranging from home-made jams, hand woven baskets, RTW's, Real Estate, and a leap to into the motoring industry with aftermarket parts and accessories.

5. Kadayawan Promos (SUPER SALE)

During this festive season, everyone wants to participate in sharing the fun and excitement. Even business owners and local establishments will take part in the celebration by giving good deals to all Dabawenyos. Below is a  round-up of the Kadayawan offers I found online:
