Over the years, it has helped to keep me sane as well as fit, so I am always looking for ways to run more. Without a doubt, what you wear while running is important. The more comfortable you are the more likely it is that you will enjoy your run, and stay out for longer. Being prepared, and wearing the right kit also means you are more likely to stick to your routine and be able to run even when the weather is not ideal.
The right trainers
Top of the list of essential equipment is a good pair of trainers. After all, if your feet are not comfortable, you will not get far. Investing in a high quality pair of trainers makes a lot of sense if you are planning to take up running. You need footwear that is designed for jogging. High quality trainers provide good support, and allow your feet to breathe naturally. There are thousands of different models out there, which is great, but it can be hard to choose the right ones for you. If you are buying your first pair of trainers for running, it is normally a good idea to take an hour out and visit a sporting goods store. This will allow you to get one on one advice about what type of running shoe is best for your type of foot, and level of experience.
Next on the list is a set of good tops. If you are going to be jogging in different weather conditions, layers are the answer. For hot days, vest tops are good, on slightly cooler days a short-sleeved t-shirt is a better option. A hoody is ideal for cooler days. If you are planning to run on days when it may rain, it makes sense to buy a lightweight jacket that has a foldaway hood and is at least shower proof.
Whether you run in shorts, sports leggings, or joggers is very much a matter of personal choice. To some extent the weather conditions, dictate what you wear. Again, it is wise to have a selection. That way you are ready for anything. The great thing about jogging bottoms is that you can always just slip a pair on over your leggings or shorts. You just need to make sure that they fit well at the waist, and ensure that the legs are not too loose. This ensures they do not flap around too much, which can make it difficult for you to run unimpeded.
A good hat and sunglasses
Last on the list, is a good hat to give you some protection from the elements. In the summer, a baseball cap coupled with sunglasses is essential to protect your eyes. For the winter, a lightweight beanie hat is a good option. It fits snugly, will keep you warm, but can easily be taken off and slipped into your pocket.
