The Need to Get Away and What Made Me Fall In Love

I've been wanting to get away from my old routine, to try something new or to have a sweet escape. I wanted to run away from everything. I wish I had the courage to leave everything behind and start all over again. However, along the way, I came to realize that I couldn't just give up because things are hard so I chose to be faithful to my dreams. By far, I'm feeling great but a part of me still wanted to take a break which why I immediately said yes when some of my close friends in law school invited me for an overnight beach outing. I knew I needed some R&R with the ones close to my heart.

The Day I Told Myself "I Will Stand Still"

The funny thing about life is that we don’t know how much we need something unless it presents itself to us, especially when we least expect it. This is what I thought of after I attended the law school recollection for third year students. If you go through my old posts in Twitter and in this blog, you will see how difficult it was for me in the past few months. There were many struggles which brought me to a point of complete surrender.

Shining Holidays at Marco Polo Davao

It is a known fact that Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Whenever I drive around the city and see Christmas lights and trees or hear Christmas songs from my radio, I feel instantly happy. Instead of complaining about the traffic and holiday rush, I allow the spirit of Christmas to bring me into a peaceful and happy state. There is really something about this season that brings smiles and laughers to people regardless of what they are going through or no matter how busy they get.

Tomorrow Could Be Different -- This Keeps Me Going, How About You?

There will come a time in your life when you would think that "it" is no longer worth it. You know from the bottom of your heart that it is something that you've always wanted. You wanted it so bad that you were once willing to do whatever it takes to get it, to have a taste of it and to finally succeed. Then, something happens and all your hopes start to crumble down. It would seem like no matter what you do or how hard you try, you'll always "get stuck". Sad as it may sound but sure, shit happens.

Learn the Art of Writing (How to Submit Open Letters at TCC)

I am the type of person who always has a pen and a notebook or a journal inside my bag. Aside from the “girly” items, these are the things that I always bring wherever I go. For everytime that I feel a sudden rush of emotions or the lack of it, I write on my journal or blog about it. Writing, whether the traditional way or through the use of technology, is undoubtedly therapeutic. It is one of the best and easy ways to release the burdens that we feel, to take note of the special moments worth remembering and to finally say words we are afraid to let out.

We write for the same reason that we walk, talk,
climb mountains or swim the oceans - because we can.
We have some impulse within us that makes us
want to explain ourselves to other human beings.
That's why we write
that's why we dare to love someone -
because we have the impulse to explain who we are.

This themed run is 5 kilometres long. For every kilometre, a dash of color is splashed to your Color Dash shirt. At the end of the run, everything turns colorful.

Wanting Someone Everyday in Every Way

Reading anything that has nothing to do with law school makes my soul happy. The reason why I enjoy reading so much is because it brings me into a different place -- where I can let my thoughts go wild and my heart feel great things. For tonight, I checked one of my favorite Tumblr blogs and browsed for the latest posts about poetry. One post caught my attention. It was perfectly written so I want to share it here. To make this article better, allow me first to show you a famous painting by a French surrealist Rene Magritte.

Motherhood and The Importance of Some Me Time

Motherhood and The Importance of Some Me Time

A nice hot cup of coffee in the morning is just the perfect way to start your day. In fact, it is the most important part of my day. That cup of coffee gets my mind straight and relaxes my whole body.

After that, it’s pretty much a roller coaster ride. From handing my own clothing boutique to the responsibility of taking care of two kids- the day can be pretty hectic.

My morning starts nice and early and the kids usually get ready on their own while I prepare for breakfast. After dropping off my daughters to their schools, around 9, I spend my day at the store, taking care of the business.

I get to meet a lot of people and that works out perfectly for me as I love socializing. That is the reason why sometimes I end up logging on to Bingo Diamond, which is an online gaming site. Here, you get to chat with other players online and the bingo games never fail to entertain. One of my favorite aspects of online bingo is that I can chat with all my bingo buddies and share with them all of latest designs and have them tell me whether they like it or not- and it’s mostly good advice. Let’s not forget my cup of espresso every time I log in to Bingo Diamond, which is currently one of my favorite bingo sites. The site has a few free bingo games and their unique range of pattern games are really exciting too.

Being an avid coffeeholic- appreciating good beans are something I inherited from my dad while I was younger. And trust me, nothing beats the aroma of freshly roasted Coffee beans.

Although it’s always fun spending time with the children, at times I love the company of just me. Yes, me-time. It becomes mandatory for me to carry my tablet and a book while I leave from home, for my store.

Sometimes when the afternoons doesn’t call for much of a crowd; I go out for a drive and stop by this tiny Café down the Cowcross Street. About a ten minute drive from my store and it is one of my favorite places to relax, read and occasionally indulge in online bingo while I take sips from my cup of brew!

"Just Give Me A Happy Middle and A Very Happy Start"

I think this is just the saddest part of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (so far) -- where Rachel hugs Ross before his wedding. It was only recently that I got too engrossed with this 90's TV series to the point that I couldn't go to sleep without watching one or two episodes. You know that I easily get attached to the characters of the TV show or movie that I enjoy. Verily, it can be said that I'm absolutely in love with Rachel and Ross. There is something about their love story that makes my emotions fluctuate and it really breaks my heart to know that they're parting ways.

Friends Need Time and Space Too

I woke up at the right side of my bed today. I had a really good sleep, which only means that I had a wonderful Tuesday night. What made last night exciting and full of fun was my reconciliation with a close friend in law school. We haven’t talked for like six weeks despite the fact that we see each other almost everyday, sit beside each other in class and hang out with the same group of friends (both LA and Nachura). I can’t even believe I had the courage and too much “pride” to ignore him for the past weeks. Trust me, it was difficult but my useless pride helped get through it.

Our reconciliation was totally unexpected. We never said anything to each other, we just smiled. Right there and then, we both knew we’re back to being friends. The first thing I said to him was “I miss you!” and all he said was “I wish I could say the same.” It may sound mean but I know he’s just kidding since he always does that whenever I try to show him some affection. My friend K is not really comfortable with my smitten personality. He finds it annoying and fake! (Hahaha)

Reminding One's Self of "Hakuna Matata"

Today, I had another realization. While I was listening to my teacher’s lecture during our Legal Counseling class, a classmate called my attention and handed his phone to me. He wanted me to read a message which said “Classmate mo ni Algene? Nabanggaan daw iyang sakyanan.” In our dialect, it means that my car, which was properly parked outside the school, was bumped by some driver who probably should not drive at all.

I won’t deny the fact that I’m completely pissed off about it. I had to skip my class right away and run in heels just to deal with the problem. But it has always been my weakness that whenever someone says sorry, all my feelings of remorse against that person suddenly fades away. Since the driver already said sorry, who am I not to take it? At least she was responsible enough to own up to her mistakes and ask for an apology. So instead of getting angry about it, I just need to let it go and find ways on how we can both fix my car.

Feel Good Music: Let These Be Our Life Songs

“Where words fail, music speaks.” This line from Hans Christian Andersen tells us about the power of music. It is capable of improving our mood, changing our perspective and inspiring us to do better things. I can't remember a day when I didn't put my headphones on to listen to my favorite playlists on Spotify. This morning, I tuned it to "Mood Boosters" while reading for my exam for the afternoon. Then suddenly, a thought popped into my mind -- to start a new category on my blog where I will share songs from different playlists which moved me at a particular time (and I wish, may move you too).

For my the first post under this new category, it will be composed of feel good songs that we all need to hear when we are feeling down, questioning our existence or purpose, wondering what we are doing here or simply have no idea about everything.

Hold On Tight by Greg Holden

On days when it seems like complaining is the best thing to do, let this song remind us of how amazing life is and for the reasons why we must not take it for granted. My favorite part of this song is: "I'll try not to complain about the things I have lost 'cause when you have something great, that just means there's a greater loss." Why don't we hold on tight to what we have been handed? Life -- you just don't know how long you will have it so don't take it for granted.

When You Realize That Life Is Too Short

"I could die anytime." This is what I thought of as I walk around Davao City Memorial Park. The last time I went there was August 2015 for my law school org's activity. For 2015, I am back again at this familiar place for the same reason but this time, I have a different feeling. A sudden rush of emotions filled my entire system and I don't have an explanation for it. All I know was that there were some realizations that crossed my mind about the current circumstances in my life and the way I respond to them. As I looked at the tombstones, I started to think about the missed chances and opportunities of the people who are already dead. To be honest, it was a relief to know that I am still alive. Am I not lucky enough to still be here in this world and get to enjoy endless possibilities?

It's About Time: You Gotta Let It Go For Better Days to Come

For the days that I completely feel shi*tty about things, all I do is write on my journal and remind myself of this beautiful affirmation: It is okay to believe in unicorns and dragons, and to know that you are made of stardust and are a unique miracle whose existence is essential to earth. You just need to open your eyes wide enough to really see that anything is possible and for that you are not bound down, you are limitless.

Thank You McDo: Happiness from Little Things

It always amazes me how simple things can make me feel happy. Just when I was having a bad day, a gift from McDo Philippines cheered me up. So I'm writing this post to express my deep gratitude to them. I came home late one night and when I entered my room, I saw a package sitting at the end of my bedside table. I can remember how stressed I was that time and how all the bad vibes went away when I opened the box...

These cute minions took all my worries away. They're so adorable! They remind me of the fact that we always have a choice every single day - either to be happy or to be sad; that it all depends on us on how we are going to deal with things. I placed them in the living room of our house where I can see them regularly so whenever I see them, I'll be reminded that I am always in control of my emotions.

How to Organize Your Own Local Book and Coffee Day

Humans are gregarious creatures and most of us like nothing better than getting together to share news, express our ideas and just take an interest in our fellows. For those who enjoy books, an event that combines talking about books with refreshments on tap is a sure winner.

There is nothing better than books.

Books can inspire new ideas, awaken old favorites and set you on a path that takes you who knows where. This is why, for book lovers, there is simply nothing better than settling down with a good book, unless that is talking about books with other bookworms of course. But organizing a local book and coffee day can be a challenge, so how do you go about it?

Happy 6th Social Media Day!

Can you believe that my first ever blog was created or hosted under Friendster Blogs? It was on that site where I shared all my happiness, frustrations and experiences as I went on with my high school life. Sad to say, I was not able to download everything published there. After Friendster, I moved to Multiply where I had an opportunity to share not only blog entries but also photos and videos. However, as days went by, I realized that I needed a better platform so I moved my blog to Blogspot and since that day, I (The Coffee Chic) never left.

Shop Smart and Be Happier with ShopBack PH

"Whoever says money can't buy happiness doesn't know where to shop." This is one of the famous quotes of Blair Waldorf from my all-time favorite TV series - Gossip Girl. The said line reminds me that there is always something that can take my stress away and it is certainly no other than shopping. Nothing feels more liberating that going to my favorite shop, getting the things I want or just simply checking their available items. But of course, it is so much better if I get an opportunity to save big on my purchases. I don't think there is someone out there who does not want to take advantage of sales, discounts, offers and other promos.

Imagine a world where you can shop and shop without spending more of your hard-earned money. Or what if you can earn some cashback as you shop? Wouldn't the world be a brighter place? I've encountered a site which allows you to exactly pay less and at the same time, get a cashback. It's which is a platform for e-commerce discovery and loyalty.

DBS Unites for Acquaintance Party 2015

We did it again! The Davao Bloggers Society had another successful and fun-filled Acquaintance Party last May 16, 2015 at The White House Fusion Cuisine and Wine Lounge. If you have been following my DBS-related posts, you are already aware it is an annual event usually celebrated during the summer season where bloggers from the different places in Davao region gather in one place to get in touch, bond and re-connect with one another. I'm proud to say that The Coffee Chic is one of the officers who organized this year's acquaintance party. My co-officers and I are overwhelmed by the responses and support we got from both the bloggers and our dear sponsors.

On Your Own for the First Time? Do These Things...

You’re finally moving into your very own place. You won’t have to worry about parents trying to enforce the same rules you had in middle school or yelling at you to clean up your room. You won’t have to worry about roommates eating all of your food or borrowing your stuff without asking and finally, finally, things will stay where you put them. It’s a time to be happy! And excited! And, if we’re being honest, it’s also a time to freak out a little bit.

Being on your own for the very first time is really scary. Yes, there is a lot of freedom that comes with having a place that is just yours. At the same time, suddenly the only person who can be held responsible for everything is you. Yikes!

Sucker for Happy Uncomplicated Days

The dark days are over.

I’m back on track and everything in my life is falling back again to its right places. The first month of 2015 was beyond perfection. Almost all things worked out the way I wanted them to be but somewhere along the way, I found myself lost. Suddenly, my priorities started to change. Worse, it took me a long time to realize that I was no longer on the right path. February was a so-so month – there were happy and gloomy days. March was a complete struggle. I felt like things were falling apart – I stopped my online work, I became bored with blogging and I lost my interest in studying.  The last blow came when my Tatay died on the second week of April. He was my mom’s only brother whom I have considered, since the beginning of time, as my second father. I was devastated but no one knew.

Cliche as it may sound but it seemed like the world has completely turned its back on me. Of course, no one close to me noticed that I was in pain --- that I was struggling. There were nights when I couldn't sleep thinking about random stuff. In fact, a part of my story was shared on The Struggle in Most Nights

How to Beat the Holiday Blues

Anyone who has been on a holiday, will know what a holiday blue feels like. That feeling of being back home but still not completely out of the holiday fever. That is what you call a holiday blue. After 5 days of pure bliss and excitement, it can be a little difficult to settle in to your usual routine.

I stayed in one of the most beautiful hotels in Finland, Hotel Kamp which is an elegant hotel set right in the heart of the capital city, Helsinki. Thereby, it was the most ideal location to go bar-hopping, shopping, site-seeing and doing various other things. Whenever I travel I always make sure I completely immerse myself with the culture of the place and the only way to do this, is by being part of the crowd and respecting their customs.

All in all, everything about the city was so mesmerizing and what added to the charm of the city, was the friendly people and their passion for music. There were many good memories I made during my visit to Helsinki, many new people that I met and new experiences that I learned.

There were rarely any instances where I found myself feeling away from home or homesick. But when I did, I play free bingo. These gaming sites, provide for a perfect way to reconnect with people that you know. I have been an avid player on GameVillage and have made some interesting friends online too.

They knew everything about my trip and they even suggested a few dishes that I needed to try while in Helsinki. Although, I wasn’t too happy about my brief visit, I was glad I was going home with new experiences.

So, there’s always to ways at looking at a glass that is half full, or half empty. While I was upset about going back to my daily routine, I also was content about my short holiday.

The Struggle in Most Nights

I have been staying up late for the past few nights. It would have been a good thing if the cause of the sleepless nights was studying for my upcoming exams. Well, to be fair, I was trying to read some law school stuff but in the middle of those nights, I find myself completely lost.

Choosing Lakas Atenista Was The Best Rush Decision Ever

There are many decisions in life that we have to make in every step of the way. Some decisions are not grand that they do not really require any discernment at all while some requires a lot of thinking. Those are the decisions that must be really thought of and you can't make them with a snap of your fingers. Days must be spent for thinking, feeling, analyzing and discerning.

For the past few years, I made "grand" decisions which have really a great impact in my life. I admit that I'm guilty for making rush decisions which, cliche as it may sound, have changed my life instantly. Among which was what organization I would be joining in law school. I am an independent woman and have always believed that I don't need anyone to accomplish things. However, law school made me realize how vulnerable and weak I am... how I need certain people in my journey. It came to a point when I have to make a choice with what group I want to be affiliated with.

Debunking the Common Misconceptions About Drug Addiction

Believe it or not, there are still a lot of individuals who have no idea what it means to be addicted to a substance. Though there are an increasing number of individuals becoming addicted to drugs on the daily basis, there are still a lot of misconceptions out there – some of which could prevent the average drug abuser from getting help or even make them feel worse about themselves.

Whether you suffer from addiction yourself or you know someone who is suffering from drug addiction, having a full understanding of what the illness is, and how it affects the addict physically and mentally can make getting help and support a lot easier.

Introducing the Country's One Stop Shopping Destination for Busy Ladies

When I was still in college, I really loved window shopping. I go to the malls and check boutiques one by one before I make my purchases. Since the money I had during that time came from my allowance, I had to make sure that the items I’d buy are definitely worth it. After "every" window shopping, I return to my “chosen” stores and that’s the time I get the things I want. That way, I am able to get the best value of my money. But at the same time, it also costs me a lot of time and most of all, it was completely a tiring process.

Now that I’m in law school, things have changed a lot. I hate to admit it but since 2012, I preferred online shopping. The best part about it is that it allowed me to shop for the things I want without living the comforts of my own room. Even if I'm in coffee shops or at school, I also get a chance to browse for some cute finds online. As we can all see, there is a great increase in the number of online stores that cater to the different needs of ladies like me --- those who do not only want to save time but also some cash.

"Love, Rosie" Reminds Everyone to Take "That" Chance

Who would have thought that “Love, Rosie” could bring me to tears on a Sunday night? Well, I got tired reading a novel so I decided to take a break by watching Youtube videos on how to braid my hair. When I got bored from my random browsing, I decided to check a film from my “Must-Watch Movies for 2015” folder. I chose Love, Rosie and then, I realized that as I watch the film, I could not stop crying. To be honest, I did not expect that this movie could affect me this much.

When Something Becomes Something Else

When does something become something else? Maybe when you stop hoping. Maybe when you start to realize that you’ve been wishing for “it” to happen for too long but it never did. Maybe when you start to get tired for trying so hard but “it” didn’t turn out to something you’ve always wanted. Or maybe when you wake up one day and realize that you deserve better.

It's Okay to Be Single on Valentine's Day

There are only a few days left before Valentine’s Day. My newsfeed is full of V-day related posts. Some of my friends are already sharing about their weekend plans with their beaus. There are those who look forward to celebrating the “Hearts’ Day” in a fancy restaurant, enjoy the sunset with their loves at beach or do any intimate activities at romantic places. Some are also talking about the gifts they are planning to give their partners and the presents they wish to receive from their lovers.

Then… There are those who talk about their frustrations (but yes, in funny way) about Valentine’s. Some are bitter about their lost love, the love that got away, the love that never had a chance, the love that ended before it even started, the love that never came and/or the love at a wrong time.

I’m pretty sure that I don’t fall in the first category – the group of people who are happily in love on Valentine’s Day. At the same time, I'm also not sure on whether or not I fall in the second group – those who has issues about love and yes, the Valentine’s day. All I know is that I thought this year’s February 14 is going to be different. But as I see it, it’s going to be that same happy-yet-boring-do-not-mind-me day for me.

February 14, 2015 – the third Valentine’s day that I’m still (yes, proud, happy to be and sometimes wondering why) single. I’ve learned to count the years because my friends never failed to remind me (every single year) that I’m still loveless during V-day.

Of One Who Was Destined for Better Things

It's the first day of the week and I can't believe that I'm feeling oh-so-good after everything that happened for the past few days. There's no doubt that I woke up at the right side of my bed! The first thing I did was to grab the first book I saw on my bedside table - Lang Leav's Love and Misadventure. It has always been my thing to flip the pages of a particular book, randomly stop at a certain page and read anything written on it. For this morning, I landed at page 107 of L&A:

Swan Song
"Her heart is played
like well-worn strings;
in her eyes,
the sadness sings,
of one who was destined
for better things."

Dear Future Me

Dear Future Me,

I hope that today you are the person you always set out to be. I hope you accomplished everything that they said you could never do.

How many lives do you change in a day?

Do you speak out for what is right, or sit there regretting your silence? I hope you are what I’m not. I hope you speak out with such a voice that everyone around you can hear it even when you aren’t speaking. I want you to have power in the way you speak- giving light into someone’s world filled with darkness.

I hope you live as if you are the only one capable of making a difference, and embracing that ability in the best way possible. You don’t need to have your name written in the text of a history book, but you need to live to make your words give life to the ones who thought they didn’t deserve one.

When you read this letter, I hope you are somewhere where all of you previous goals can be made accomplishments. I hope you still remember your past, and pass on your story to those who need to hear it most- to show them that they are not alone.

Valentine Gifts That Are Much Better Than Flowers and Chocolate

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it is time to get a little more creative. A box of chocolates and a bunch of red roses are just so overdone. Won’t your other half prefer something a little more creative? Many people think that it is the thought that counts when it comes to buying a gift. It shows you have taken lots of time to think of your love and what they might like. It shows you have thought outside the box and chosen something a little more specific to them. Plus, flowers die, and chocolates get eaten. Why not give a gift that has a bit more longevity? Here are a few different ideas for you, if you’re planning something fun for your Valentine.

If your Valentine is a little more creative than cheesy, then some original fine art paintings would be such a hit. It is something that they can display in their home, and it will remind them of you. It will last for a while, so it is a good sign of longevity in a relationship too. It could even be something that you have created if you yourself are the artistic one. Knowing that you’ve taken time out to put something together for them would mean the world. This is definitely a thought that counts gift. Perfect to woo your valentine.

An Experience

Though an experience is just a one-time thing, the memories that it will make will last for a lifetime. It could be something that they have always wanted to do that you could help them cross off their bucket list. It could be visiting a certain place or country, or doing something wild like bungee jumping. Knowing you have taken the time to plan out something for them will mean a whole lot more than flowers or chocolate. Time is really showing that you love someone, rather than just getting them something generic.

This might sound quite dull but hear me out. You could get them a cute notebook, or a specific notebook made to write out things that you like about them. Then they can read one each day for a year, for example. It could also be a collection of love letters that you could put together or even something like a scrapbook of the things you have done together or photographs of the two of you. This will take a little preparation and time, but it will make a massive impact on the recipient.

If you want to impress this Valentine’s Day, then a piece of jewelry will be sure to please. You can’t go too far wrong with something that sparkles, right? So maybe a necklace, earrings, or a ring (though the latter does come with a certain expectation, doesn’t it)? It would be even better if it were teamed with the offer of going on a date to get dressed up and fancy and to wear the new earrings or bracelet, wouldn’t it? Have a happy Valentines!
