#GLOBEProjectWonderful2014: One Thing I Can Give to the Philippines

"If there is one thing you can give to the Philippines, what is that gift?"  Answering this question is not an easy thing to do. As much as possible, I would like to give every single best thing to my dear country. I believe that the Philippines and the Filipino people deserve all the good things this world has to offer. My fellow countrymen deserve happiness, contentment, love, peace of mind and hope. Every Filipino family has a right to eat three times a day, experience a worry-free life and be close to one another. Every child is worthy of having a loving family and a home he can call his own. He does not deserve to be in the streets begging for something to eat and wandering with nowhere to go.

If only I have the power to be someone else, I would definitely choose to become a genie so that I can grant wishes and make dreams come true. In case it happens, I would not only grant one or three wishes but all the desires of the Filipinos. However, reality bites and tells me that I will never be a true genie. Well, if I can't be one then I'm sure I can always act like one. I want to make everyday a perfect time for giving and sharing!

Bride for Rent: A Feel-Good Movie for 2014

The promising love team of Kim Chiu and Xian Liam shows everyone (again) that they are the perfect match for each other with the overwhelming success of their latest movie "Bride for Rent." On its first day, January 15, 2014, the film earned 21 million pesos and the numbers are growing every day. Last year, the same tandem wowed everyone with their exceptional acting skills for the blockbuster hit "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?" Since then, people are talking about how they look good together, on and off cam. They are all-natural when it comes to portraying their roles in television. It seems like they don't need to exert extra effort to give life to their characters.

The good news is that Bride for Rent is not about two women fighting over the same man, a man committing acts of infidelity against her wife or an ex-girlfriend who is trying hard to get back with her past love. Rather, the movie is more about the positive side of love which is shown in a very unique way. The film imparts to all its viewers the values of forgiveness, honesty, letting go and loving unconditionally. Bride for Rent is a light-drama movie which will bring joy to everyone who will watch it.

The film is about Rocco (Xian Lim) and Rocky (Kim Chiu) who was forced to be in a situation wherein they need to fake their marriage. For Rocco, he needed to do it to get his trust fund because one of the conditions for the release of such is that he should be married. On Rocky's part, she agreed with the set-up as it will enable her to help the family, she being the bread-winner. In the beginning, everything was fake but as they continue pretending to be husband and wife, they started to see the beauty in each other. Rocky was able to bring the best man out of Rocco who had trust and commitment issues. Just when Rocco proposed to marry Rocky (for real), he found out that Rocky was also doing a job for Lala (Rocco's grandmother.)  He felt betrayed by the only woman who made him capable of falling in love. That's the major twist of the story but everything that happened before and after it are worth-watching. So, I won't spoil more details about the movie. You have to see it yourself.

Photography Points Out the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

 photo LS_32_zps07953d98.jpg

Photography is an adventure, which makes you experience once again the moments that have already passed. Like life itself, it seems ordinary for many. That is why photographers have to learn to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. A Miami commercial photographer has to see in a “Peace Love World” hoodie, more than just a piece of textile, he has to observe how comfortable it is and how perfectly it fits the model and the person who will look at the picture of it. The advert made by the Miami commercial photographer has to convince the potential buyers that this red hoodie is what they need. There is no other way of creating such an advert without seeing through the mundane stuff we are all so used to, as it said in the beginning.

Official First Release of Eskriba

This photo was posted in my Instagram account (@heyimalgene) last June 2013. It was taken at the Finster Building of Ateneo during the launching of Eskriba. As you can see, Camille, Eskriba's EIC was holding the teaser issue of the first-ever school publication of Ateneo de Davao College of Law. Together with us is Eskriba's Associate Editor, Bruneson.

I Wish They Taught Money in High School

Whoever said money can't buy happiness doesn't know where to shop. This is one of the lines Blair Waldorf said in my favorite TV series, The Gossip Girl. I really admire Leighton Meester's character in the said show. Blair is a rich-fashionable-control-freak from the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. She is surrounded with young, famous and influential teenagers like her. Coming from a rich family, she never experienced working hard to earn big bucks. She always gets what she wants without worrying about the amount of expenses. In fact, reading a book in a coffee shop in Paris or eating her favorite macaroons in a French restaurant is such an easy thing to do for her. All she needs is to book a flight to France and have the best time of her life.

By now, you are probably saying that "Of course, Blair's life is possible only in movies." But come to think of it, is it really impossible for someone like us to have a life like her? The answer to this question depends on how you look at life. If you always think that there is scarcity for money and resources in this world, then your answer would be "no." If you have a positive outlook in life and values the importance of working hard, then "yes" would be your answer. While it may be true that money doesn't make the world go round, it doesn't mean that getting less of it is okay. Or getting more of it is bad.

In the latest book of Life Upgrade, I Wish They Taught Money in High School, I discovered some great facts and helpful tips on saving money and having a good income even at a young age. (And maybe get a chance in having a Blair-like lifestyle.) There are two parts of the book:

Making the Holidays Last All Year Long

I'm always sad when the winter holidays are over. For just a few months every year, we get to make our homes look beautiful, cook the very best food, and dress in fun party clothes. We visit our loved ones, spend time with our friends, and try to share as much love as possible. In truth, we spend this short season doing what we should be doing all year around.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not advocating that we incorporate the more stressful parts of the holidays, like overspending or crowded air travel, into our everyday lives. But why do certain behaviors only happen during the winter holidays?

The Best Gifts in 2013

"I have no idea what 2013 has in store for me. Will it bring more heartaches? Will it let me experience failures again? Or will it make my heart beat to the sound of love? Will it make me feel more victorious moments? Nothing is certain but I know that I can always do something. Whatever comes my way in 2013, I will accept it with open arms. I will always say "yes" and accept the challenges. My power word for the year is BELIEVE. I know someday, all these dreams will come true." This is how I ended my year-end post in 2012. And I will be starting my first blog post in 2014 with the same line.

2013 was a great year for me, my family and most of my friends. I'm happy to say that there were no heartaches for the previous year. The 365 days brought so much happiness in my life. There were some sad and depressing days but luckily, I survived them all. As for failures, I'm also glad to say that in most of my days in 2013, I have more success stories than that of the former. There were many moments when I felt I won different battles. Yes, I'm proud of all my experiences in 2013. It was a happy, challenging and blessed year.
