Coffee Vouchers

Voucher codes have been part of my everyday life for a while now. I have friends who will not go to a restaurant without first consulting their favourite voucher code provider.

Initially, voucher codes were contained on static internet devices and you had to print the code off from your computer. This hindered those who either didn’t have a printer or who were not up to scratch on their printer maintenance, which, to be fair, can be a fairly costly operation and there are a lot more glamorous purchases out there than a new ink cartridge!

The first voucher codes were really just for experiences and days out but they soon filtered through to the field of eating out and it seems that this is where voucher codes have really made their niche.

Irony of Law School

When I checked my news feed this morning, I saw the post of Belinda - one of my friends in law school. Her status made me smile because I'm also feeling the same thing.

"Do you feel like you're unequipped, so tired and so drained that you don't want to get out of bed and even think about doing anything?! You very well know you have to get out of the bed, open those damn books to memorize those provisions plus read tons of case files in full text so that you can manage a word or two when your professor calls you to recite later. You think of all the possible ways your professor can embarrass you in front of your classmates (who will be, by the way, sweating cold sweats while watching you get grilled) and you dread so damn much of even stepping in that four-cornered he** called classroom. BUUUT the moment you're in class and start feeling the hype again and getting in the groove, you forget all your worries heck you even forget there is a world outside school and it's as if everything fits perfectly. This is how law school is for me every single effin' blessed, glorious, err miserable day... IRONIC."

The Right Way to Spend and Save

Don't Go Broke

When planning a budget, many people tend to overlook how much money can be wasted on minor purchases over a long period of time. Because many of the things that people buy are only a couple of dollars, they tend to view them as inexpensive necessities.

However, these small amounts can quickly add up, and they can lead to major financial problems such as overdrawn accounts and missed bill payments. In fact, it is very common for a person to look over their bank statement and wonder where all their money has gone. Therefore, anyone who is wishing to avoid these kinds of issues should pay careful attention to several areas of possible overspending.

Kadayawan in Davao 2012

Kadayawan is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines. It is celebrated annually by all Dabawenyos and Dabawenyas. Every month of August, the people of Davao gather all together and give thanks to the bountiful blessings received by the city. The word Kadayawan is derived from the Mandaya word, "Madayaw." It means "good, valuable, superior or beautiful."

This festival is a way of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Kadayawan 2012's theme is "Ten Tribes One Vibe." The tribes of Tausug, Matigsalog, Obu Manuvu, Maguindanaon, Bagobo Tagbawa, Sama, Bagobo Klata, Maranao, Ata and Kagan are the tribes who graced the festive celebration of Kadayawan.

There are two main events that I love about this festival! First is the Indak-Indak where different groups showcase their talents by dancing on the streets. For this year, I wasn't able to witness the Indak-Indak for some unwanted reasons. The second most-loved event is the Pamulak sa Kadayawan or commonly called the Floral Parade.

Of course, I was there to witness the grand floral festival where contingents feature their entries decorated with beautiful flowers and gifts of nature.

At Rizal Street, Davao City.

With my blogger friend, Naprey Almario!

Colorful. Happy. Lively. Davao.

This is one of my most favorite floats!

Kisan Lu Float won the first place for the Pamulak sa Kadayawan.
Prize is P500,000.

Jake Cuenca and Jessy Mendiola - Coca Cola Float.

Maja Salvador, John Lloyd Cruz, Angelica Panganiban, Cory Vidanes

One of the promising actors in the country.

Happy celebration.

Hiyas ng Kadayawan.

Indeed, Kadayawan celebration is getting bigger every year! This only means that the city tourism is becoming more successful in showing what Davao offers to everyone. The festival is not only celebrated by Dabawenyos and Dabawenyas. Many people from other cities also visit Davao to have fun and enjoy the month-long celebration of the King of Festivals.

Hope to see you next year for Kadayawan 2012!

4 Ways to Save On Your Baby’s First Year

We all hear a lot of talk about how much children cost, but while there are definitely added expenses with a new baby, there are also ways you can minimise the amount you’re spending in Year One! Here are four tips on how to save:

Use hand-me-downs. Kids change sizes fast and that means that friends and family with slightly older children may be looking to get rid of things like onesies, bibs, dresses and overalls. With so many clothing changes ahead, why waste money on new clothes when you can benefit from some lightly worn ones?

Shop thrift stores or eBay. Along similar lines, there are plenty of deals to be had on clothing at thrift stores and online. One thing to note is that that it is usually recommended to buy car seats new as they can be subject to manufacturers’ recalls.

Star Cinema's The Reunion

It's been a long time since I last published a movie review post. The reason behind this is my hectic schedule at school and online job. As much as I would like to watch new films every week, I couldn't do it due to many hindrances. Two days ago was an exception for I was able to see Star Cinema's newest project The Reunion starring Enchong Dee, Xian Lim, Enrique Gil and Kean Cipriano. Together with these promising actors are the lovely actresses namely Jessy Mendiola, Megan Young, Bangs Garcia and Julia Montes.

The movie is all about four men who have been together since high school. They treat each other as brothers. When they graduated in college and started to live the "real life", they found out that something is missing. There is a specific aspect in their lives that need some changes so they can move forward and continue living the kind of lives they ever dreamed of. To do this, they have to go back to their past and re-examine all the things they did. All the questions they have in their minds started when they attended their high school reunion. Since that night, their lives have started to change.

This film is undoubtedly a blockbuster hit! It portrays the typical lives of people who need to visit their past so they can make every single thing in the present right. Sometimes, in order to move forward, we need to take some steps back to how things were before. The Reunion is a must-watch movie. If you haven't seen this great film, don't fret because it is still showing on cinemas nationwide. After watching the movie, come back here and share how your insights about it. Have fun!

Cutting Costs on Health Insurance

If you’re unfortunate enough to succumb to illness or injury, there’s no knowing what could happen for the foreseeable future. However, having health insurance can help with meeting the financial costs you face in the event of being ill or injured. While it’s useful to be insured, some people worry about the cost of having a policy, seeming resigned to paying a small fortune for the privilege of having health insurance. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to reduce the amount you pay for it.

Common Complaints About Freebies: Why They're So Wrong

We are often told that the problem with this world is that everyone wants something for nothing. You're not prepared to work for something, the wisdom goes, you expect it to be handed to you. And apparently this means that we're raising a generation of people who don't see the value of hard work. It is at the center of a lot of tirades which would make you think none of us actually works for a living.

The irony here is that, if you can get something for nothing, why wouldn't you? If you see the value in things, and have the chance to get ahead in the deal, wouldn't it be stupid not to take it? It's not like 2-for-1 washing powder or "buy now pay later" consumer deals have led to us all downing tools and quitting our jobs. Anyone who tells you it's wrong to expect something for nothing is looking for a reason to get angry.

Cafe France Media Brunch

One of the perks of being a blogger is getting invites to special events. This is the reason why I love to update my sites despite my hectic schedule. It feels good to attend gatherings with my fellow bloggers and share memorable experiences with them. Just this morning, I got an invite for the opening of Cafe France's first branch in Davao city. The whole marketing team of this new cafe organized a media brunch for the press and bloggers to have a taste of what they are ready to offer for the Dabawenyos and Dabawenyas.

Since I have no classes for the day, I was able to attend the event and bond with some of my blogger friends. The highlight of the event is the food testing! Below is a collage of some of the delectable foods prepared by Cafe France.

I would like to thank Ms. Karla Singson of Davao Bloggers for coordinating with Cafe France! Most importantly, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the marketing head, Ms. Haydee Evangelista and the whole team of Cafe France for the media brunch and the press kit (contains: CD, Write-up, P500 worth gift certificates, ballpen and menu).

Cafe France will be open for ALL tomorrow, August 16, 2012. The first branch is located at the second floor of Manila Bulletin Building along Rizal St., Davao city. Two more branches will open at Gaisano Mall of Davao next week!

Note: This is not my official post for the said event. I will feature Cafe France at Chic this weekend! I still need to edit all the photos taken earlier.

Shopping Online

Shopping online is one of the things that I enjoy doing especially now that I barely have time to go to the malls. Because of my hectic schedule at school, I could no longer have the luxury of time. The availability of online shops like EdenFantasys is, indeed, a true blessing.

Gone are the days when I would spend three hours searching for the products I wish to purchase. Nowadays, I can simply buy shopping items in less than thirty minutes. The best part is I no longer leave the house to satisfy my shopping needs.

Digital Libraries and Repositories in the US

Digital Libraries and Repositories in the US

The age of technology has greatly transformed the ways we store and access information. In the past, it was somewhat difficult to find all of the information available on a particular topic, digital libraries and repositories have made it simple for anyone with access to a computer to find a wealth of information with a few simple clicks. These resources store a variety of different types of documents in digital formats and include everything from audio and video files to academic texts and vital documents. In the US, there are thousands of digital libraries and repositories, many of which offer free access to users, making information widely available to anyone with an interest.

Searching for Information

The majority of digital libraries and repositories offer a user interface that allows for general or detailed searches. In addition, it is possible to search multiple servers within a federation through either distributed searching or by searching harvested metadata. In distributed searching, duplicate results are grouped or eliminated from the final results while the other results are properly sorted. This makes it much faster and easier to find needed information, but can be limited by the capabilities of the included databases.

In searches for previously gathered metadata, no connections to the digital libraries are needed. Instead, results will dome from indexed representations of the information. This approach has the benefit of offering more consistent results, but the resources needed for such searches are much more expensive to maintain.

I Just Thought You Should Know

This is written by one of my study buddies while we were reading the cases for our class. I have no idea what she is going through but I know that publishing her note on my blog will make her happy. Sometimes, people need to express their thoughts and feelings. By doing such, they can learn to let go of whatever is holding them from moving on.

First Exam in Law School

Let me share some of the wonderful photos taken after our first exam in law school. My classmates and I prepared for the Criminal Law I major exam by studying everyday and night. Last Saturday, we went to a local coffee shop for our last review before the test. Since some were not able to sleep the night before, I, Yna, Elica and Ron were the only ones up for the study session.

The Revised Penal Code of the Philippines and The Criminal Law Textbook of Reyes are our ultimate best friends! We have to read these books all the time.

How eBooks Saved My Job

I promised myself last year that I would quit my job after the Christmas holidays. Funnily enough, I loved my job and still do now. However, I found that the 2 hours of commuting everyday began to get me down, and thought I’d start looking for a job closer to home. I found that no matter how many new albums I put on my iPod, I just couldn’t escape away from the over-crowding, delays and stale air. This was all until I was given the Amazon Kindle for Christmas, and discovered the thousands of online books available for download. As corny as it sounds, I now love the commute!
